 Rural Arts Network is organising a series of quality arts and cultural tours across a range of art-forms to be hosted by local community and voluntary promoters around the country in the coming years. Over time, these will include events which will specifically promote widespread community involvement, increased arts participation, include some high profile performers, target young promoters and where possible bring new art forms to local communities and also celebrate existing cultural activities.

 To start we are looking for interested individuals, groups and communities who would like to host an event in October to get in touch. We are applying to the Arts Council for funding for a new Touring Award and are teaming up with the Galway based theatre and street performance group The Gombeens and renowned storyteller Clare Muireann Murphy to apply for funding for a performance and workshop tour in October 2010.

 The tour will be structured in such a way that the majority of costs will be funded and only some local costs such as accommodation and food will need to be covered locally and these can be paid for out of box-office income which should be more than sufficient to cover them. The intention is that the box office income will remain the sole property of the local group once those costs are covered. (If the arts council funding is insufficient or if they advise us to proceed in a different way we will inform people and discuss alternatives but you are under no obligation to proceed if you are not satisfied).

 The proposed double bill will feature the Gombeens performing their show ‘Stories of a Yellow Town’ which is based on a collection of real-life personal stories/observations recorded by interviewing Irish & Brazilians in Gort documenting when Brazilians first arrived in Gort to the present day. The second-element of the programme will include storyteller Clare Muireann Murphy who will present her own magical mix of tales. The performers will stay in the local communities and where possible will deliver local workshops in consultation with the local community.

Walk in the Wood – An exhibition of new wood sculpture by Conleth Gent will open on Friday 7th May – 7 – 9pm.  All are welcome.

Friars’ Gate is delighted to present this collection of work by Conleth Gent.  Conleth studied at UCD, Dublin and has exhibited widely in Ireland. He has also worked on and led many community art projects, winning first prize for the Fitzgerald Park, Children’s Art Project in 2005. His love of wood and working with wood can be clearly seen in each of his one off unique pieces. Concerned mainly with personal expression through the use of figurative elements, his is an individualistic approach communicating something of the character of the particular piece of wood and the artist’s interaction with it. Conleth created a public sculpture for ESB which is situated on Sandymount Strand. In 2008 he was the winner of the CAST Foundry Award at Sculpture in Context.  Please join us for the opening of Conleth’s exhibition at Friars’ Gate on Friday 7th May between 7 – 9pm.

Sidhe Theatre Company present Tea Set and The Candidate written and directed by Gina Moxley.  Performed by Maeve McGrath and Frances Healy.   
Tea Set  is an engrossing, dark, and insightful little gem of a play. A young woman, with nothing to do on Millennium Eve, hires herself out as a minder to the ageing mother of a wealthy couple who head off to a sun holiday.
The Candidate  is a hilarious narration of a holiday romance with a difference, with a local TD. This story is told by the young woman with comical stories of this unusual encounter in the sun.

Please note there is strong language and themes of an adult nature in this production.

A gloriously earthy mix of trad, folk and the blues  - the Leitrim born singer is joining forces with multi-instrumentalist and singer, Rick Epping, guitarist Aidan Brennan.  MOJO Magazine described her as “A voice that pins you against the wall”, and McPartlan has long been recognised as one of the finest female voices to come out of Ireland.  For the 2010 tour, Mary is joined by an imaginative line-up which incorporates the best of traditional music and song mixed with American folk and blues.

St. John’s is now the cultural hub of Knockainey hosting a series of concerts annually. The Church has been lovingly restored by the historical and conservation society of Knockainey and work is now complete on the restoration and upgrading of the Sexton’s House at the front of the Church providing further facilities for both audience and performer.
